The international student group Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) hosted a conference at the University of Pennsylvania (in Philadelphia) from Sep. 29 - Oct. 1, 2006.

The purpose of the conference was to galvanize a student movement calling for universities to play a more active role in improving access to medicines in poor countries. The conference combined teach-ins on the access crisis, activism training, and strategic planning for campus campaigns.

Presentation topics included:

  • The current state of the access crisis
  • Equitable access licensing
  • How universities can contribute to needs-driven R&D for neglected diseases
  • A history of effective student activism around access to medicines

This conference saw the launch of UAEM's statement of principles, the Philadelphia Consensus Statement.
