Funding Application for Travel to the UAEM Annual Conference
Yale University
November 14-15, 2009
Description of the Conference
Univeristies Allied for Esstential Medicines (UAEM, http://www.uaem.org/) is a coalition of students at top research institutions across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The goals of the organization are to (1) ensure every health-related innovation developed in campus laboratories is made available in the developing world at the lowest possible cost, and (2) increase the amount and impact of university research on neglected diseases. Each year, the UAEM National Conference draws student leaders not only from undergraduate colleges, but also from the schools of law, medicine, business, government, public health and graduate studies. Last year, the UAEM conference at Berkeley brought together 320 students from 50 campuses across the United States, Canada, and the UK.
University of X participation in UAEM’s conference serves the following vital goals:
Membership
The Conference draws new membership to the organization. Many of our most active members first joined UAEM after attending the fall conference. The conference also re-energizes existing members.
Education
Introduces new members to, and educates them on, the complex topics necessary for the advocacy work UAEM performs in the fields of global health, intellectual property, medicine, drug development, and neglected disease policy.
Leadership
The conference provides a forum to elect and integrate new national student leadership. This opportunity allows students from the University of X chapter to participate as leaders in the national leadership structure of this highly effective student-led organization.
Training
Gives members real hands-on training through interactive sessions on, inter alia, starting a chapter, talking with university administrators, and starting a drug-specific campaign. The conference also trains University of X students to become a new generation of effective global public health advocates.
Networking
The conference allows students to meet leaders in global health from organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières and Partners in Health, who have been guests at the conference. It provides members with an invaluable opportunity to share ideas and resources with their peers from across the world. The conference affords the geographically diverse membership of UAEM a rare occasion for face-to-face discussions and exchanges.
University of X Student Involvement
The University of X chapter of UAEM will send a team of students drawn from University of X membership. The team will include 5 members representing the Business School, the Medical School, the School of Public Health, the Law School, and the College.
The University of X will be conducing a presentation at the conference in which the team displays and describes our activities at the University of X over the past year. The team will also participate in planning and strategy sessions with other chapters and national leadership.
Benefits of the Conference
UAEM activities promote University of X student interests in intellectual property, licensing, and the potential impact of University research activity on access to medical end products in the developing world.
Last year, UAEM members collaborated with the Y Center to bring a panel of experts to University of X to discuss novel approaches to licensing agreements on patents held by Universities. In the spring the chapter organized a conference addressing how University of X can better focus efforts into neglected disease research.
This year, students from UAEM are working with faculty member ______ to design and implement a survey evaluating awareness of the patenting and licensing process among University of X Research Faculty with the goal of educating the faculty on ways to become more engaged in the licensing and development process. In the spring, the chapter will bring together a group of stakeholders from the University of X administration, technology transfer office, faculty, and students to discuss university policy on licensing.
The purpose of involving University of X students in the Annual Conference is to foster more such student and faculty involvement with University of X UAEM activities. This will open up new opportunities for University of X to collaborate with students and faculty from other institutions and will ensure that University of X law students have a role to play in designing and implementing creative new legal approaches that foster the development and delivery of public health goods.
