10 million people will die this year, and 19,000 children will die today because they don’t have access to existing medicines and vaccines. 1 billion people worldwide suffer from debilitating and deadly neglected diseases.

Every major debate over access to a medicine in the developing world right now is connected to a drug developed at a university.

With your help, UAEM works to push universities forward — to ensure that the fruits of campus research are made available in the developing world at the lowest possible cost, and to promote research on neglected diseases.

We have made incredible strides over the past year. Our work has been documented in Nature, The Chronicle of Higher Education, the Financial Times, the Boston Globe, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and many others. Our recommendations have been taken up by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Senate. And for the very first time, top research universities have recognized a responsibility to make their discoveries available “globally, at sustainable and affordable prices, for the benefit of the world’s poor.” But there is a long way to go from principles to action.

To keep the momentum going we need your help. There are precious few moments in the world in which by doing something small you can be part of something great. This is one of them.

“For too long, life-saving medical tools that are the fruits of university-led discovery have been denied to poor people in poor countries. If our universities really are to be institutions for the public good, this must change.”

- Dr. Paul Farmer, Co-founder of Partners in Health

“Biomedical knowledge and achievement is growing at a tremendous pace, but is unmatched by ethical thinking about how to apply the results equitably, humanely and wisely. The universities are forgetting their role as guardians of human wisdom. UAEM has created consensus. Now it is time for the policy makers to act.”

- Sir John Sulston, Nobel Laureate in Medicine
